Based on American football, Tecmo Bowl was introduced to the world as an arcade game in 1987. Up to 4 players could compete at once on teams with made up names. Playing on teams definitely added to excitement, making it a fan favorite.
The arcade version also boasted a double-wide screen and controls for all 4 players, which was very innovative for its time. Play selection was nothing like what we'd expect because there really weren't any to choose from. Instead you would select the player you wanted to get the ball, thus determining run or pass. The 2 v 2 setup was actually pretty cool but required all 4 players to insert a quarter (or token).
The answer to that question is quite simple. Everyone has a clear understanding of what American football is and should be. Tecmo Bowl delivered that experience in a format easily accessible via the Nintendo Entertainment System (nes). There were several video football game released years before Tecmo Bowl. They were cool but the honest truth was they weren't that fun to play. Tecmo Bowl solved that problem, even with limited teams (12) and four plays total it was just flat out fun to play. The graphics and colors were just enough to make the experience great. Not even only have 9 players on each side (instead of the normal 11) seemed to be a problem. People just loved to play this game!
